In Puerto Rico, the number of fatalities associated with lane departure represented 37.85% of the total number of fatalities caused by traffic crashes between 2014 and 2016.

  1. Strategic Goal: Reduce fatalities related to lane-departure crashes.

  2. Performance Measure: 5-year moving average of traffic fatalities from lane-departure crashes.

  3. Objective (Performance Goal): To reduce the 5-year moving average of traffic fatalities related to lane-departure crashes from 105 to 88 within the next 5 years.

5. Strategies

a. Implement engineering methods to improve the lanes delineation and pavement condition.

b. Educate about the causes and risks that result in crashes by leaving the area of the corresponding lane.

c. Implement engineering methods to remove and/or protect fixed objects within the free recovery area on the sides of the road in accordance with current standards.

d. Continue analyzing the data to identify high-risk locations.

e. Evaluate the need to amend the Law to avoid street sales on the shoulder roads.

f. Evaluate the effectiveness of compliance with the inspection process of all registered vehicles.
